Imagine! At one time the only place where you could watch a John Waters film was at church! In fact, it was the Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 811 Cathedral St Baltimore, MD 21201 where you could see Eat Your Makeup for two nights only! The Reverend Frederick J. Hanna, who died February 25th, 2011, was associate rector at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in the Mount Vernon neighborhood from 1959 to 1970. Not only was he an outspoken champion of civil rights in the 1960’s, but we can credit him for giving a young John Waters the chance to show his films! You can see this church in the background during the finale of Pink Flamingos when Divine, Cotton and Crackers come around the corner by The Drinkery, a gay bar that is still open today!
