"Peggy and Grizelda struggle through wooded area in mist. They come to a clearing and we see Mortville, a hideous rural slum. Everything is made out of trash and garbage, including the houses." ~ From the Desperate Living screenplay in Pink Flamingos and Other Filth: Three Screenplays by John Waters
Welcome to Mortville! I assumed that the posted “NO TRESPASSING” and “KEEP OUT” signs were a direct royal proclamation from Queen Carlotta herself! So I kept a safe distance just in case she caught me. The last thing I wanted to do was spend all day wearing my clothes backwards.
Mortville was really just a long driveway 45 minutes north of Baltimore in Hampstead, MD. The owners at the time of filming Desperate Living were friends of John Waters who let the Dreamland crew convert their property into Queen Carlotta’s royal dumping ground. To further authenticate the junk-filled scenery, they even had a bus take local Baltimore bums to the location. Once there, the bus would leave so none of the newly found residents of Mortville could just get up and go!
The opening scenes of the movie featuring one of Mink Stole’s famous rants were shot in and around the real house where John Waters grew up. You can find that location right here…my very first post on Trashy Travels!
